Our Storytelling Brains

Directed by Susan Swaney, Voces Novae will explore the ways our brains connect the dots—to past, future, friends, and strangers. Music by Bach/Swingle; Henry Purcell; choir members Abby Henkel Roman, Mary Craig, and Gabriel Lubell; a song from Smash; and more.

Voces Novae's concerts are free and open to all. Donations are accepted at the door.

Note: "Perigee" by Mary Craig and Abby Henkel Roman is an elegy for a child who died. For those who might be triggered by this topic, we suggest reading the poem first and deciding for yourself about your comfort with hearing this piece.

Voces Novae will perform at the Sunday Service of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Bloomington, 2120 N. Fee Lane, 10:15 to 11:15 AM on November 3. All are welcome. This performance is to thank the UU Church for hosting our rehearsals on Monday evenings as well as the two 2025 concerts.
 
The repertoire will include:

      Giedrius Svilainis, Vox populi
      Billy Joel, And So It Goes

We are resurrecting this program, originally planned for March 2020. Despite the title, it is really about connection. If you have ever played "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon," you should know that he is only the 669th most connected Hollywood actor. (Number 1 is Rod Steiger.) Music of the Beach Boys, Dominick DiOrio, Orlando di Lasso, Arvo Pärt, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Franz Schubert, Kurt Weill, and Ralph Vaughan Williams, at the Unitarian Universalist Church. Free with donations welcome.

How Do You Feel? A Choral Exploration of the Mind/Body Connection

Voces Novae will use gorgeous choral pieces by Biebl, Forrest, Josquin, Kirchner, Ruggles, and others to create experiences that highlight how we feel, and what our bodies and our brains have to do with it. Chocolate will be involved, donated by the Bloomington Chocolate Company.

Admission is free; suggested donation of $15 or any amount is greatly appreciated but not required

Gender 2.0

Voces Novae is reprising our popular concert from this past spring, Gender 2.0! Join us at the Spencer Pride commUnity Center on Sunday, November 6 at 4:00 pm after their “Who Is Spencer Pride?” event. Free!

Additionally, Voces Novae will perform the same program that morning at the Bloomington Unitarian Universalist Church service at 10:15 am on November 6. You can also watch it via livestream.

Did you know Facebook offers over 50 different gender options for its users? During this performance we will provide the opportunity to reflect on the Four Gender Spectrums -- biological, gender expression, gender identity, gender attraction -- as well as on transgender youth, non-binary/queerness and gender-neutral pronouns, and relationships between parents and their transgender, gay or queer children.

The choir is made up of 16 singers and will perform mostly unaccompanied, with some guitar and ukulele played by the singers. Plus one conductor.

This program is an extension of Voces Novae’s (wildly successful!) Gender 101 program in 2015.

Sanctuary

Voces Novae's first concert of the 2018-19 season will explore the topic of Sanctuary. We will perform this concert twice on Sunday, October 21.

At 2pm on Sunday, October 21, come hear an uplifting 40-minute concert at the Unitarian Universalist Church. The program includes music by Peruvian composer Francisco Pulgar Vidal, settings of texts by DACA Dreamers, and music by choral favorites, Gjeilo and Whitacre.  Pay what you are inspired to pay after the concert in a free will offering.

OR, join us for a choral adventure later that day! We’ve arranged late afternoon tours of the Exotic Feline Rescue Center, a sanctuary to over 200 tigers, lions, and other large cats. Tours will start between 3:30 and 4pm. Then, join us for high tea and the concert at Clayshire Castle (5 minutes from EFRC, outside Bowling Green, IN). A donation of $30 ($15, 12-and-under) includes both admission to EFRC and the concert. We encourage you to get tickets in advance for this limited-seating event.

Granfalloon: A Kurt Vonnegut Convergence

The Indiana University Arts and Humanities Council is hosting Granfalloon: A Kurt Vonnegut Convergence, a conference and festival celebrating the life and work of Kurt Vonnegut. Events take place May 10–12 in Bloomington on the IU campus and other Bloomington venues.
Voces Novae will perform as part of other warm-up acts for Father John Misty on Friday, May 11, 5:45pm, at Upland Brewing Co. We will sing the world premiere first movement from our commissioned Vonnegut requiem (Cary Boyce), And So It Goes (Billy Joel), and The Hymn of Acxiom (Vienna Teng). Dance Party Dance!

Dance Party Dance!


Saturday, February 10, 7pm, at Harmony School gym. Listen (and dance!) to beautiful music provided by the choir and a live band. This family-friendly event will feature choral waltzes, polkas, foxtrots, swing, Latin, Motown, rock-n-roll, and American Songbook favorites, a band, a bake sale, and guest performances by members of the IU Music Theatre BFA program.   You can enjoy this program sitting down or dancing! (Children 12 and under free.)

We are kicking off our 21st season with a program about Team Spirit! Wear your team bling, and show up for the tailgate dinner by David Cox at 6pm.

At 7pm, the choir and special guests will perform a short concert with music by David Baker, Mendelssohn, Ockeghem, Poulenc, Sister Sledge, The Wailin' Jennys, and others.

The art and science of happiness

For 20 years, Voces Novae has been changing the way we interact with choral music through engaging concerts that challenge the singers and audiences. We'd love to hear your favorite concert memory!

We're celebrating our 20th Anniversary with a program about the Art and Science of Happiness.

  • Saturday, May 13 at Happy Hour (5pm)

The choir will sing a program of Eric Barnum, Hildegard von Bingen, Janequin, choir member Cindy Kallet, Rossini, Whitacre, and Pharrell Williams.

Afterwards, there will be a celebration with food, drink, activities to encourage scientifically-proven ways to boost happiness, and a display of programs from Voces Novae's first 20 years.

Tickets are $15, $10 for students and seniors.

On Friday May 15, Voces Novae will present "Gender 101: A Choral Cabaret", a light-hearted look at the span of human gender possibilities, with music ranging from Victorian parlor songs to music theater tunes, pop/rock favorites and Eric Whitacre.

Shows will be at 7:30 and 9:30 PM at Rachael's Cafe, located at Third and Lincoln.

Cover charge is $5.

Join Voces Novae on Oct. 11 on the B-Line

Join Voces Novae for our newest musical walking adventure on Bloomington's B-Line Trail on Saturday, Oct. 11, at 5:30pm.

We will begin at the corner of Dodds and the B-Line, at the new B-Line Station (235 W. Dodds). We'll stop along the way for a variety of musical numbers that take their cues from stories associated with the B-Line. We'll head north and finish at the Showers Commons (Farmers' Market plaza).

The program is free; donations are welcome. Rain date is Sunday, Oct. 12, at 5:30pm.

Parking will be free at Family Solutions (Dodds & Morton), at the Neurosurgical Clinic of Bloomington – Drs. Haddad and Poor (700 S. Walnut), behind the Convention Center, west of the B-Line, and at the Showers Commons by City Hall.
